These photos document the making of a second parchment document sculpture. I submitted it to a juried show, with a theme of “refuge”. I thought, “Oh, a refuge could easily be conjured from these forms”. So, I had a goal, whereas before I was just trying to figure out how these old documents were speaking to me, and how to clean, preserve, fold, sew and mount. There is a wall piece in process. There is a desire to make them robotic… at the very least to make them into lamps. But, too many ideas, so I was happy to take on an open ended theme. Refuge.

Sewing pleats in parchment sometimes requires pulling the thread (bookbinder's thread) through with pliers.

how to make the pleasted document stand? or should it drape over the edge of something else? I threw these cones and bisque fired them to use as some sort of base form/holder for these folded shapes. The wooded pin is just someting that intrigues me.

This is another piece. It was the first folded figure that begged for one of those ceramic cylinders to stand on.
