New York Sleep-Over

Wangechi Mutu exhibition PLUS attending ACSF (Architecture, Culture and Spirituality Forum) Screening,

After parking downtown, we went to see Wangechi Mutu at The New Museum in NYC. The shows is over now. I’m so glad we caught it. One of the most powerful one-person exhibits I’ve ever seen. From there we went to the ACSF for dinner and the screening of “ACSF/CTI Critical Conversations”.

After a few days, I can now say that Mutu’s huge monsters ("my word for them) moved me the least, though beautiful, all of them. These pieces need to be, to exist in our world, unlike a lot of other sculpture (including my own) that I’ve seen that doesn’t really enhance our world. There should be more public art. That’s another topic for down the road…

It was truly an honor to be involved in the making of “ACSF/CTI Critical Conversations”. I have always envied and admired people who are architects - let’s say successful architects, it is not an easy path to stay on and become influential. Particularly the women who are at the table in recent decades AND NOW working toward engaging more POC (people of color) and people who are compromised, homeless, without a space/place to give them hope. The film(s) is not yet publicly available as it will first fan out to architect groups and film festivals. If this is of interest follow here: ACSF website

The forum gave us a room at a cultural center in Jamaica NY. That allowed us to socialize, answer questions and absorb excellent critiques about the film, as well as see forum member’s new publications. And, get a good night’s sleep.

In case you missed the Wangechi Mutu “Intertwined” exhibition, and feel seeing selections of what moved me: click on links below to see my [unprofessional] photos with some personal comments. I’m thinking many of you here will be interested to see some visual details and curator’s tagged-descriptions.

BTW: “Intertwined” was curated by Margot Norton, Chief Curator, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (former Allen and Lola Goldring Senior Curator at the New Museum), and Vivian Crockett, Curator, with Ian Wallace, Curatorial Assistant.
